Forgotten AI: There’s more than content gen for your digital workplace

Large language models and content generation have the business world mesmerized and fixated on new, unimagined possibilities now literally at our fingertips. While groundbreaking and awesome in the true sense of the word, LLM is not the only AI technology that can make business and the digital workplace better. We’re so bewitched by the shiny and new, it’s easy to forget about trusty translation capabilities and consistent content moderation. Once-seductive cognitive services are now lurking by the punch bowl, instead of at the center of the dance floor.

I’m here to call us back, if just for a moment, to remember and respect the workhorses of modern AI. To again experience the delight of intelligent automations, alerts, detections -- of smart technologies that have your back when you’re on the frontline of battle for a better employee experience.

To guide us in this trip down memory lane, Workgrid has just released four new apps that harness the power of different AI technologies that create a safer, more inclusive digital workplace. Journey with me to revisit these neglected technologies and show them a little appreciation.

Content Moderation app: Stewarding an open but safe environment

It’s critical for employee engagement and well-being to maintain an inclusive digital workplace, free of harmful content. Workgrid's Content Moderation app uses Azure AI content moderation AI services to detect and flag offensive content in user-posted materials on the Igloo Intranet platform. If a content violation -- such as profanity -- is detected across blogs, forums, or wikis, then the app sends an alert to administrators, empowering them to review the post and take appropriate action promptly. This powerful app helps maintain a safe and respectful environment for employees to collaborate and share information.

Out of the box, this app integrates with Azure and Igloo, but you can use the Workshop no/low code app builder to modify the template to work with other services and data sources.

Having done a rotation in corporate communications for a few years, I know the peace of mind an app like this can provide. We want employees engaged and empowered to share, but there’s always the chance in rapidly evolving cultural climate – or across cultures – that the words we choose are not safe for all. Precautionary tools that flag potentially harmful content for review can give us the freedom to encourage more engagement and participation from all.

PII Analysis app: Safeguarding sensitive data

Protecting the personally identifiable information (PII) of employees and customers alike is a top concern for businesses, but when users can post their own content in the digital workplace, sometime too much information is unintentionally shared. Workgrid's PII Analysis app uses Azure AI language services to scan blogs, forums, and wikis within the Igloo intranet platform and alerts administrators when PII is detected. By proactively and automatically searching for PII, organizations can mitigate the risk of data breaches and uphold strict privacy standards.

As with the Content Moderation app and all templates offered by Workgrid, the PII Analysis app can be modified to work with other services and data sources.

Translation Reference app: A globally inclusive digital workplace

Effective communication in multiple languages is essential for businesses with diverse teams and international operations. While AI translation services work seamlessly in conversational interfaces today, when language content is within an app in the digital workplace, it can require some additional work to globalize it. Enter Workgrid's Translation Reference app, which app provides app admins and builders with a reference model to add AI translate services to practically any app. Including both Azure AI and AWS AI services, you can add “translate nodes” to enable automatic content translation between any two supported languages to create a more inclusive digital workplace.

Content Genie app: Wishing for a little content help

I confess. We too are smitten with generative content. But must we choose a loyalty? Can’t we have both the Volvo of AI and the Tesla? All kinds of AI services for all kinds of purposes? We can! And you can too.

Introducing Workgrid's Content Genie app, a generative content tool that provide employees with a simple interface for creating business content. Based on Azure AI’s LLM, the app prompts you to select a content type (such as a blog post, email, or speaker notes), choose a writing style (such as professional or marketing), enter a brief outline, and set a preferred word count. Before you finish a sip of your coffee, the Content Genie grants your wish for a solid draft of your content. This AI-powered app is a tremendous time saver and productivity booster by helping employees take the first step in writing. I spent many early years of my career as a copywriter, and even as a writing professional, getting started was always the hardest part. An app like this would have saved me hours back then, and today, it cuts my writing time in half.

Moreover, by building dropdown options into the app, it also starts to teach employees how to set parameters for LLM and what it can do with the tool beyond writing limericks in the style of a favorite celebrity.

For early generative-AI adopters, we are also exploring building LLM capabilities directly into our conversational assistant – meaning employees won’t have to call up an app for help creating a content draft. They will be able to ask the Workgrid conversational assistant directly for they help they want. Adding this capability as an option will enable organizations with a range of appetite for AI to choose the experience that’s best for them.

In a world where digital friction plagues employees' workday, and where it seems like the to-do lists just grow instead of shrink, AI apps can help support the employee experience in more ways than one. While shiny new AI advancements may be the talk of the town, we must remember to appreciate the more humble AI services that provide powerful delighters to make the digital workplace better for all.
